Gutless and Grateful Performance combined with interactive workshop

Trauma affects every individual differently. Storytelling through theatre makes healing possible for all. “Gutless and Grateful” is a primal piece of musical theatre, chronicling sexual abuse, 27 stomach surgeries, organ failure, six years unable to eat or drink, and months in a coma through interwoven song and dialogue. Amy shares her near death experience and unique story with humor, hunger and heart. A celebration of life through creativity, passion, and resilience, Amy shares how theatre helped to facilitate healing through a decade of trauma, serving as lifeline which enabled her to reclaim her voice and identity. Participants will develop a resiliency toolbox to thrive through difficulties by using exploratory theatre exercises and creative prompts as guides.
The performed word and nuanced gesture can transform our lives, our community, shape our world, cultivate self-love and create compassion. Amy will perform segments of her autobiographical musical, demonstrate the healing process of telling her story, and provide tools for others to do the same through creative exercises linking resiliency to empowerment and positive change. Drama, storytelling and music can bring marginalized voices center stage, and reframe our experience. Learn how to tell your story in dynamic, engaging ways, by transforming adversity into creative growth.
- Participants will be able to describe three ways that storytelling through theatre can aid the healing process after emotional and physical trauma.
- Participants will be able to list four identifiable symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and connect creative resilience tools to alleviating each symptom.
- Participants will create four tools to develop their resiliency toolbox and identify how each tool can plant the seeds of post traumatic growth, enabling an individual to thrive after trauma.
Did life go a totally different way than you had expected?
Has that unplanned event in your life shaped who you are today?
If this sounds like you’ve been here before, then you’re a Detourist! Detours can seem like obstacles, yet can also be opportunities. Through creative expression, we reshape our identities and discover the flowers on our detoured path, gaining adaptability and a positive, empowered attitude toward obstacles, transforming life’s “detours” into everyday blessings.
“Detourist workshops” aim to encourage growth and healing by sharing our stories; and to transform communities by inspiring people to open their minds and reframe their view of “detours” into a new direction for life.
Through creative writing prompts, engaging discussions, improvisational activities, and art exercises, participants learn to celebrate the detours that form our identity. Using the Detour “RoadMap to Resilience” participants learn to navigate life’s messy detours through the transformative power of creativity.
- Participants will be able to identify four qualities that foster resilience in times of adversity.
- Participants will be able to develop three creative tools to help them navigate a “detour” in life.
- Participants will be able to define two instances of a “detour” in their life, and connect how each “detour” has contributed to their identity.
The workshop will involve active movement exercises, exploratory art exercises, creative writing prompts, engaging discussions and theatre games. The “art” component will not require additional materials. This component involves drawing, doodling, and mindful artistic expression – paper and crayons will be sufficient. The goal of the workshop is for participants to discover how through creatively communicating our “detours” we are able to experience in the moment, how that detour has made us who we are. Therefore, the workshop strives to incorporate multiple disciplines to accommodate all types of “Detourists” and their various learning styles. Learn more here.
